About ONITT
Practical surface land training for oil and gas work in Alberta.
Who we are
ONITT, formerly Surface Land 101, has built a library of surface land processes, templates and regulatory flowcharts for oil and gas projects in Alberta. Its purpose is to give a clear overview of the surface land process and of how it fits within licensing and production, from the first plan to a producing site.
That library is now becoming self-paced online courses, so a team can learn the process step by step instead of searching through documents.
What we teach
The courses are built from that library and cover topics such as:
- How surface land work fits within licensing and production
- Freehold, Crown and First Nations land, and the field process for each
- Surface land packages for wellsites, pipelines and facilities: agreements, notifications and compensation
- Directive 056 participant involvement and notification
- After the lease: rental reviews, pipeline damages and landowner payments
- Abandonment and reclamation
Who it is for
Companies that need their surface land work done correctly, on time and in line with the regulator, including teams that do not have a full-time surface land professional on staff, and land and regulatory staff who want a structured view of the whole process.
Under Alberta’s Land Agents Licensing Act, only a licensed land agent may negotiate for an interest in land. The courses explain the process; they do not replace a land agent.

Our courses are training, not legal advice. The official text of the legislation and of the regulator’s directives prevails.
